Softer mallet tips generally yield a warm, round sound emphasizing the fundamental of the note with very little attack sound. Soft tips are ideal for a dark, blended sound and recommended for a general purpose tip. Great stick for either blending in a band or for a somber, gentle tone on a solo.

Harder tips place more emphasis on the upper partials of the note and give a punchier, more percussive sound. Rigid tips are recommended for helping a drum "cut through" the ensemble with a brighter, more pronounced sound. These can also be quite nice for solo playing.
